This article is also published in storytime tapestry and gather.com

I am sitting here on Nov 7, 2008, wondering what I should write about, I am always so wrapped up in writing for paying jobs that I just do not have time to write for my own pleasure. Writing is as much a part of me as my right arm. Writing sooths my soul and helps me to communicate with the world.

It is funny but my mind is drawing a blank, I don't really know what to write about. Normally I have a theme that I work on but for the life of me I do not have any burning issue that I want to discuss.

For those of you who have kept up with my writing of late, know that I have been writing quite a few medical articles. That is because I am a freelance writer and I have been working on a series for a doctor on pain management. So that is why you see a lot of cancer articles popping up. These articles are my main source of extra income.

I was very worried for a while as I had lost my temporary disability payments and was reduced to a welfare cheque. The welfare cheque covers my rent and nothing else.

Without the little extra from disability I would be evicted because there would be no way I could continue to manage without ever having money to pay the electricity, heating, telephone, and internet. Basically they are the only bills I have but I cannot manage them.

So I was worried about the disability, if I couldn't get it anymore, I would surely be evicted and to find a place to live in Montreal at a cheaper rent than I am paying is just not possible. I was worried that I would be living on a park bench.

The reason the disability was refused was because I had temporary status and the government explained to me that temporary was only for a one-year maximum period. I had exhausted that period. Yet I still was not well. I had no choice but to file an appeal and wait.

I filed the appeal on the September 23, and on October 23 they granted me a telephone interview. The offices are located in Quebec City, which is about 160 miles, or 257 KM away.

I was interviewed by a socio professional, which is a fancy word for a social worker, and a medical doctor. They asked me several questions such as, was I depressed, did I have friends I could talk to, was I suicidal, what medications I was taking, what doctors and tests did I see and have done, and of course what medical conditions did I have. They said I would have to wait another 15 days for the decision.

Everyone said to me, "surely they would grant it with everything wrong with you." The main condition I have is fibromyalgia and that is not accepted as a disability in Quebec and so that was the concern I had. My doctor had only asked for temporary disability in the first place because he said I would get the disability based on fibromyalgia as a temporary condition but it would never be accepted as a permanent one. So when I was interviewed I added a few extra conditions not indicated before, such as obesity, irritable bowel syndrome and osteoarthritis.

So I sat and waited and worried and started looking for a new place just in case, but of course I cannot find anything cheaper, I only hope that something will come up in the future.

I also worried about making money online as these medicals articles are great but they do not constitute full time work. Last year I had this online organization as well as a website, medhunters, where I made money on the purchase of my individual articles that you have seen written in my e-zine, Storytime Tapestry and on gather.com. Unfortunately, that well seems to have run dry, they haven't accepted anything I sent them in 2008.

In the meantime I continue to rack up points on www.gather.com for home depot cards because at least I can use home depot here in Canada. I cannot get the other gifts cards or money incentives at this time because they really are only for Americans.

I do spend some time on mylot where we get paid for making little discussions, it is really easy, you can either make a discussion or answer one or both and you will be paid, also if you bring in your own referrals you will get a quarter of what they make as well. Here is my referral link for anyone who is interested: http://www.mylot.com/?ref=winterose? Or email me and I will send you the link by email.

Lately I discovered a new place to write reviews from anything like appliances, cameras, beauty products, to movies and TV series. If you are interested please email me.

These places do not bring in a fortune but they can add up to some nice mad money in the middle of the month. You might even be like me and need that money to help pay your bills.

Also, besides being a freelance writer most of you know I am an author and my book Angels Watching Over Me is available online or in print form, don't forget to check it out:http://www.lulu.com/content/964306

So this is what I do to pay my bills, but if the appeal didn't go through even that would not be enough. To be honest it really isn't even enough with the disability to pay my monthly bills and believe me I do not spend a single cent on anything frivolous, I eat from food banks and people give me hand me down clothes etc.

Of course the worry about whether I would have enough money to pay my rent was making me sicker even though I tried with all my might not to worry and just take it as it comes, I truly did. Well I am happy to announce that my worries at least for the appeal results are over.

I got the letter in the mail. My disability has been accepted for an indefinite period of time (still not permanent status) on the grounds that my condition has seriously deteriorated and I am not able to work at this time.

Here is the list of conditions that I have

Diabetes

High blood pressure

High Cholesterol

Hypothyroidism

Irritable bowel condition

Obesity

Osteoarthritis

Inability to stand up for more than 5 minutes at a time,

Housebound all winter, Spring and Fall

Inability to do housework

I am still looking for a cheaper place to live as that will ease my financial burden and I am still looking for online writing gigs. My body may be finished but my spirit lives on.

About Making Money

Yesterday, we witnessed awesomeness. Even though the World Heavyweight and WWE Championship matches were good, they weren't as good as I thought they could be. But that's okay, because the ending to both of those matches were both brilliant and exciting.

For the World Heavyweight Championship match, Edge beat Dolph Ziggler after hitting the "banned" spear on Ziggler while the referee and Vickie were down and out. Edge pulled an Eddie Guerrero, and well, he cheated. After hitting the spear, he acted as if he was unconscious and got up and hit the unprettier on Dolph Ziggler to get the victory by pin-fall.

Later that night, Alberto Del Rio eliminated Santino Marella to win his first ever Royal Rumble. This was definitely a great move by WWE because Del Rio has tremendous in ring and mic skills, and in my opinion, he was the most deserving in that Rumble match.

Anyways, rumour has it that Edge is going to face Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship on the grandest stage of them all, Wrestlemania.

This seems like a money match, but how about WWE makes it way more interesting. Why not have Christian in that match, too, and make it a triple-threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship?

Even though Vince McMahon doesn't see it, Christian's always been someone that the WWE Universe wants in the main event scene. He has charisma, in-ring talent and a huge fan following.

Not making money as a YouTube partner? Here are some tips from YouTube itself

YouTube hosted a live event today to help partners get the most out of their YouTube revenue.

Phil Farhi of YouTube, began the event by telling partners about a few of the new initiatives that YouTube is working on, to help make partners as successful as possible. He started by bringing us through the history of advertising on YouTube.

Phil mentioned that just 3 short years ago, YouTube began using in-video and overlay ads, the first step in monetizing videos. And following the first format of ads, YouTube brought Ad Sense ads, enabling smaller advertisers/customers to get on board, allowing YouTube to capture a broader range of advertisers.

Next came in-Stream Ads (mid and pre-roll ads), a format that was launched about two years ago. YouTube said this has been popular because advertisers will pay more for ads that are similar to the format on TV. At almost the same time, promoted ads were introduced and it was proven to drive traffic to videos that were featured using the ‘promoted video’ format.

A few months ago, a new ad format for partners called TrueView was rolled-out. This format lets users watching a video skip the ad after five seconds. An ad format that YouTube says is less interruptive and doesn’t risk annoying your audience because it gives them the chance to hit stop.

Phil asked the question “ What makes a movie a successful?” Using the movie industry as an analogy, he went on to explain that there are many factors that come into play that make up the overall picture; ticket prices, seats filled, distribution etc. It’s the same with YouTube as he pointed out. Partners shouldn’t look at one aspect such as RPM (revenue per thousand page views) or CPM (cost per thousand, as an example $1 or $5 per thousand views), they should look at everything including geography.

A few points to take away

Good partners focus on overall revenue and aren’t fixated on “ticket price”. They also work hard at building a strong audience as well as trying to increase views. Good partners look at geography, RPM and CPM.

Bad partners look at the wrong metrics and don’t build up their audience. Partners who only focus on RPM might think everything is fine however, it’s critical that users concentrate on CPM as well and continue to build audience loyalty.

YouTube says advertisers are creating content that competes with user content, and millions of users are watching advertisements on the site. Think about the popularity of Superbowl ads.

Keep experimenting! Compare ad formats by type and geography and play around with different scenarios. Try enabling ads after your loyal audience has seen them or try it in reverse. Play with different recipes and see what happens when ad formats are enabled/disabled. There is a wide variety of ways to make revenue.

Take a good look at revenue break downs and compare formats; True View, in-Stream, etc.

Better reporting for ad formats coming soon. YouTube admits that partners don’t have the best reporting feature right now.

YouTube will be adding an option for partners to opt-in to just TrueView Ads without needing to be signed up with other formats.

Before starting in the office cleaning business, you should gather a good amount of information about what is involved within this business. There are sources that will help you gather information on making money through office cleaning but three basic steps are the same among all systems.

To make a good amount of money with office cleaning type work, the first step you need to consider is the arrangement of jobs for yourself. You can do this by attaching yourself with an existing cleaning business. By doing this, you don't have to look for jobs all by yourself, plan things or make a schedule for your self. It would be done automatically for you.

However, if you would like to have complete control over your office cleaning work and you don't have a problem making your own commercial office cleaning check list and spending time to get new customers, starting your own office cleaning business would be a better option for you.

The second step you need to consider in making money with office cleaning work is to know what needs to be done for each job. You need to make sure that you have the right tools and equipments to do the job properly. It may seem difficult to you at first but it's not hard to learn.

You will find that some of the customers will want you to use their cleaning products, obviously to save money, while others would like you to bring in your own cleaning products. So you need to know each of your customer preferences, fulfilling their desires and requirements to make them happy.

The final step is to be consistent with your customers. You have to be on time, fulfill commitments and be ready to do some extra work if needed. It may happen that the customer needs some extra cleaning in his office because some one special is going to visit. In this way you can satisfy the needs of the customer. It is also important that while dealing with the customer the billing is on time. Be professional while dealing with the customer and leave a good impression with them. This will help you increase your home cleaning business if you plan to create full time work.

Making Money Through

Ensure the metadata on videos have the correct information and enough words to help YouTube’s algorithm bring the best targeted ads to your videos

A report to be released from Goldman Sachs today will not only disclose some details about how the secretive firm operates and plans to change their operations in the future — as required by the Business Standards Committee established by CEO Lloyd Blankfein in response to the SEC lawsuit against the them — it "will disclose more about how it makes money," according to Bloomberg News. Of course, it will likely contain only a little bit of information to this effect, seeing as it is only 63 pages, most of which will likely be self-justifying defenses of their existing business model, and because Goldman doesn't give anything away that easily, especially not to "mollify their critics," per the Journal. If you really want to find out how Goldman makes money, you're going to have to look closely.

First, you're going to have to identify and decipher the secret code hidden within the paper, which will lead you to a map located underneath the floorboards of an out-of-the-way cabin, which will lead you to a musty castle in the basement of which sits a nervous owl with a capsule on its foot. The capsule, if you are lucky enough to soothe the owl long enough to remove it, will contain a password to a trap door, which, will lead you to an old but powerful woman who will ask you a series of questions, such as: "If you were shrunk to the size of a pencil and put in a blender, how would you get out?" After that, you must pass through an area of extreme heat, an area of extreme cold, and swim 40 lengths through a pool full of Mischievously Tickling Goldfish. Only then you will find the secret, which will be some variation of the fact that the company buys stuff cheap and sells it for more money.

Ever watch Gone with the Wind? Remember that scene early on when Scarlett's dad-before his mind with the wind-tried to sell Scarlett on the importance of land? He didn't call his estate Tara for nothing. Scarlett eventually came around and learned the lesson of the value of owning land. What lesson? Barring some unfortunate events, it's the only thing that will always be here.

You can still make money in real estate speculation. For all the talk of keeping immigrants out, and telling people who don't believe like the President does that they should leave it, America is still overwhelming undeveloped. With bans on abortion and abortion pills around the corner, even if we do manage to keep the immigrants down in Mexico, there's still going to be an increase in population. Those people need real estate on which to live and on which to sell you things you don't need.

So how can you go about making money in real estate speculation? Here are a few suggestions that have worked well in the past.

BUY UNDEVELOPED LAND
Although the most risky technique, this can also provide the biggest payoff. The risks range from the possibility of the land dropping in value to the fact that you can't get any tax benefits from it. And, of course, undeveloped land won't provide you the income that developed land can. On the other hand, who hasn't driven past a booming neighborhood and heard their grandparents say something along the lines of "I had the chance to buy that at two dollars an acre, but I just didn't have the money back then." If you live near a big city and can get any kind of a good deal on land adjacent to it, then by all means do it; there's no better gamble to take when it comes to real estate speculation. For that matter, this kind of speculation even makes sense in small towns; it wasn't too long ago that many overcrowded, over franchised suburban areas used to be relatively isolated small towns. Heck, some of the most expensive real estate in the Atlanta area, for instance, didn't even have a single Walmart as recently as twenty years ago. Now those same rural areas that used to be dominated by long expanses of literally nothing are indistinguishable from any area inside the actual city limits.

But real estate speculation of this type doesn't mean you can just drive out somewhere, stop your car and hit on a goldmine. Don't choose just any parcel of land. Do your homework. Look over the town, city or county planning and zoning records to determine where the infrastructure is headed. If plans are already in place to lay down a four-lane highway somewhere where's nothing now, that might be a good place to speculate on. Determine where commercial development and residential development will be the densest in ten to fifteen years and shop accordingly. If you're young enough and willing to wait it out, plan ahead for twenty, thirty or even forty years. What you think is ridiculously expensive for an overgrown piece of forest right now may one day look as cheap as that two dollars an acre your grandfather passed over fifty years ago. Undeveloped land is also a terrific investment gift to pass on to your children or grandchildren; real estate speculation doesn't have to focus on your own bank account. In that way, you can try looking longer into the future and significantly increase your chances of finding something really cheap.

INVESTING IN SEIZED PROPERTY
Property is often sold for the price of the delinquent taxes owed; or auctioned off to the highest bidder. This kind of real estate speculation can present a real opportunity for making money, but you have to be careful. You really have to do your homework before attending one of these public sales. The most painful pitfall may be finding out that the tax bill is greater than the actual value of the property. In addition, unless you've researched it, your dreams of becoming a real estate mogul ala Donald Trump may come wind up leaving you with nothing but blueprints inside your head unless you make sure the site has been zoned for business or residential construction first. In addition, it is wise to consult your particular state and local laws regarding the rights that a previous owner has to property that has been seized from him. In many cases, he may still have the right to reclaim his property which can result in all kinds of legal entanglements. When bidding at an auction, make sure you've kept your intentions on the property to yourself. Don't do anything to invite an unnecessary bidding war. Remember, real estate speculation is a big game for those with lots of money.

FOLLOW THE CLOWN
If you notice a McDonald's popping up in an unexpected place, take notice. McDonald's hasn't been able to sell billions and billions of hamburgers by building their restaurants where the kids ain't. Neither have the managed to make billons and billions of dollars in profit by buying the most expensive property in town. Same thing goes for any other huge and profitable brand name consumer company, whether they be Subway, Holiday Inn, or Target. Although it's probably too late to cash in on bargain prices by the time you actually see one of these companies' instantly identifiable building, if you spend a little time looking through the public records you may get lucky enough to come across evidence of their own brand of real estate speculation. If you can get even luckier and come across the record of a franchise investing in a relatively undeveloped area that is the equivalent of striking gold. Think about how often you've seen a Burger King or Pizza Hut in the middle of nowhere. Unless you're talking a strictly rural area, most often by the time the franchise goes up, there's already been some residential growth. Well, think about it: You don't make profit by buying land after it's already quadrupled in value, right? These big boys spend huge amounts of money conducting research into which underdeveloped areas are likely to grow and where they can find the best deal for land before the growth starts. What's more, you can also rest assured in the knowledge that they very rarely get their real estate speculation wrong. You want evidence: Franchises almost never sell off unused property at a loss. Take advantage of their resources and you may just find yourself benefiting by making money in real estate speculation.

But in order to do that, the Sonos crew had to figure out how to make a product that was easy to use and could deliver a sound quality that audiophiles and those listening to MP3s would appreciate (as an aside for digital music junkies, Cullen says he stores his audio files as 320 kbps MP3 files). Improvement is ongoing, with the latest advancements being the way it built its S5 boombox-style device. Sonos, not longer content to shuttle bits around the home network through a proprietary wireless system, designed a new speaker for the S5 that digitally controls the output from the different parts of the speaker.

An advantage of this is that the S5 sounds the way most consumers prefer their speakers to sound (at least according to the gurus at Lucas Arts who vetted the sound quality for Sonos) and that the speaker profile can be changed via a DSP programmer tweaking the settings. Expect those advances to be seen in future Sonos products. Cullen also notes that the home audio market is the focus today, but people listen to music in other places, such as in their cars or via headphones — an area Sonos will one day explore. As it does, it’s staying focused on providing the best sound for digital music and continuing to refine the way it builds its products in the service of that goal.

Lesson#2: Consider Usability Before You Build

It took the guys at Sonos a few months to build their first prototype, and at the end, they were left with a product only a geek could love. Realizing this, they sought help from a usability expert, who told them they didn’t need a usability expert until much later in their process. What they needed was an industrial designer who could get in early and help them build the hardware and software with an eye toward the consumer. The team eventually hired Meiko Mieko Kusano, a designer for Phillips, who told them, “Usability is in the bones of the product, not the skin.” Cullen still credits that mentality with Sonos’ success.

“Most consumer electronics companies build out hardware and then add software to update it and change their designs every 18 months. We turned that on its head, building hardware that will last and software that we can update whenever we need to in order to improve the experience.” Cullen credits that shift to Kusano, and offers up Sonos’ Zone Player products as an example. “You should be able to stream music over that for the next 15 years.”

Lesson#3: Don’t Be Afraid to Cannibalize Yourself

That long-term vision for the hardware is part of the success of the Sonos platform, but the other is the philosophy the company has about working with partners and even introducing new products to expand its base. When it launched, a Sonos system could run a user about $99 for a wireless router, another $350 to $500 or so for something that picks up that signal and connects to speakers in one room (each room would need another of these), and a special controller for about $350 to drive the system. But in 2008, Sonos released a free app for the iPod that mimicked the functionality of the controller and thus brought down the cost of the system. Sales surged. The loss in controller revenue was more than offset by sales of the new system, Cullen said.

It now has a free app for the iPad, and as mentioned earlier, Cullen says support for other platforms will come. But last year, Sonos introduced a much more disruptive product: its S5 boombox. For $400, the S5 has speakers and allows someone to create a Sonos network with the addition of a Zone Bridge for $99. The launch of that product has changed the profile for Sonos, moving it out of the specialty market and into the mainstream. At the time of this writing, items No. 3 and No. 6 on Best Buy’s Top 10 bestselling wireless and streaming audio products were S5s. However, Sonos’ S5 cracked the top 100 of Amazon’s Bestsellers in Home Audio & Theater Products list at No. 73, behind rivals Logitech and Bose. But Cullen says the fear of cannibalizing sales of its more expensive gear hasn’t been realized; instead people buy an S5, then tend to add more onto their networks.

Lesson #4: A True Platform Doesn’t Pick Winners

As a platform, Sonos plans to release a breadth of hardware and software to ensure a better digital music experience, but it also extends that to partnerships it signs with music providers. Sonos currently supports Spotify in the U.K. and Scandinavia, and that partnership alone has enabled it to boost sales of its system in those countries by a non trivial amount. In the U.S., a partnership with Pandora has had a smaller but still noticeable affect on sales as well. Cullen said Spotify and other some partners have offered to pay Sonos for providing access to their content to Sonos users, but Sonos doesn’t play that game. “We don’t take revenue from people,” Cullen said. “We don’t want any incentives to guide our behavior rather than the user choosing what they want to listen to. We don’t want to be picking winners and losers.”

So far, Sonos’ strategy is working. The company has now raised $65 million, and while Cullen wouldn’t discuss IPO plans, he says the company has been approached by buyers. However, the $15 billion home audio market beckons, and Sonos believes it has learned how to play the game well and can take the disruption provided by digital music and home networks to give the industry giants a run for their money.
